Sanctuary Status for Mortgage Brokers?

*The following was my opening monologue to start my internet radio show “Gillespie” airing Tuesdays at 7pm on FTRradio.com.  In case you miss the show I will be posting these here every Wednesday following the Tuesday show.*

There is a controversial and very interesting law that I want to bring up right at the top of the show. This law will require certain individuals to be fingerprinted, positively identified and be tracked through a comprehensive government database. These individuals have been blamed in the past few years for nearly every financial calamity to befall this nation, and regardless of how you might feel about them, many think that this step is long overdue.

Now, if you’ve been paying attention to the news lately, I’m guessing there’s a good chance that you think I’m referring to illegal immigrants in the state of Arizona. After all, it seems like a logical fit based on what you might have heard about that controversial new law.

However, if you’d guessed that I was referring to illegal immigrants, you’d be mistaken. And shockingly so, because I’m actually referring to a new law that requires mortgage brokers to submit to being fingerprinted and entered into a national database for the purposes of tracking and enforcement.

If you find it odd that the Federal government is so focused on keeping tabs on mortgage brokers while at the same time, literally suing a state in order to not have to enforce Federal immigration law, then you’re certainly not alone.

Now, there’s no word on whether any undocumented mortgage brokers will be allowed sanctuary status in cities like San Francisco or Chicago, but doesn’t it seem a little strange that our government is so willing to crack down on those “quote” evil mortgage brokers who are ruining our financial system “un-quote” while seemingly encouraging illegal immigration?

The problem with bringing this often sensitive subject up for discussion is that our opponents immediately declare us to be anti-immigrant bigots in the tolerant manner that many of us have become used to over the years. So let me start off by saying that I am very supportive of immigration. Immigrants have brought much to this country over the generations and I, like most of you, am descended from proud immigrants who lawfully came to this country in search of the dream that only America can provide.

But, that’s just it: my immigrant ancestors came legally, and they respected the laws of this land and they respected the culture, while at the same time adding their own spice to our national recipe.

But beyond even that argument, there’s something else that bothers me at the moment, and that is this:

The current administration is literally suing a state in Federal court in order to not have to enforce federal law. Did you get that? The Obama justice department is actually suing the State of Arizona so that this administration will not have to enforce the US Constitution.

Wow.

Even worse than that (if you can imagine) is that, not only is the administration suing to avoid enforcing Federal law, the Obama Justice Department is actually encouraging cities across the nation to actively ignore Federal law on immigration and become so-called “sanctuary cities”. Have you heard about these? Sanctuary cities are places in the United States that have officially proclaimed that they will not enforce Federal laws regarding immigration. In other words, if you are in this country illegally, then cities like San Francisco or Chicago are completely safe for you.

Can you imagine if the city of Indianapolis suddenly declared that no citizen within it’s borders need to fear say…paying Federal income tax? Doesn’t that seem asinine? Is that any worse than what San Francisco and other cities are doing?

And, who will actually be the leader to actually step up and put forth a plan to help fix this problem? Ronald Reagan put together a plan that essentially amounted to amnesty, and as often the case when you accept a crime, we simply encouraged more of that crime afterward. George W. Bush danced around it, mentioning several proposals but never anything concrete. Barack Obama is simply pandering to a base that will (or, in many cases already) vote Democratic for generations.

We have a major crisis on our hands, one that will take strong and courageous leadership to solve.
